Dr. Nedim Çakan joined Valley Children’s in February 2012 as the medical director of endocrinology and diabetes. Dr. Çakan is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology by the American Board of Pediatrics. With more than 20 years’ experience in his field, he comes to us from Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. He was also an associate professor of pediatrics at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan. Positions he held included endocrine attending, diabetes director, and interim medical director, division of endocrinology.

Dr Çakan’s areas of interest include childhood obesity, diabetes, growth disorders and calcium metabolism problems.

Dr. Çakan completed his medical degree and rotating internship at Hacettepe University Medical School in Ankara, Turkey. After he finished his pediatric residency training in Marmara University School of Medicine in Istanbul, he worked a year at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa., as a research fellow and lecturer. He completed a three-year fellowship program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Çakan is a member of several professional societies, including American Academy of Pediatrics; Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrinology Society; American Diabetes Association Endocrine Society; European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology; American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists; and International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes.

Dr. Çakan has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in various clinical studies, some of which were supported by National Institute of Health grants.

Dr. Çakan has published more than 30 papers in various prestigious, peer-reviewed publications, such as “Diabetes Care,” “Pediatrics,” “Diabetes Educator,” “Clinical Pediatrics” and “Consultant for Pediatricians.”

He has also received various honors, including the “Doctor of the Year” award for three consecutive years (2005-2007), from Hour Detroit magazine in Detroit; Mentorship of Pediatric Research award in 2008 for mentoring pediatric residents and medical students, from Children’s Hospital of Michigan; and “Super Doctors” award in 2011, from the Detroit Free Press.
