Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in surgery and pediatric surgery, Dr. Erik Barthel joined Valley Children’s in January 2019.

Dr. Barthel served as an assistant professor in Illinois in the department of surgery at the University of Chicago and as a lecturer of surgery in the department of clinical sciences at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Bathel is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Pediatric Surgical Association, Association for Academic Surgery, American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Chemical Society. His expert research has been published in several peer reviewed journals, including The American Journal of Surgery, Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Theoretical Biology and Medical Modelling, Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology. He has contributed to chapters in books such as the Textbook of Organ Transplantation and Natural Disasters: Prevention, Risk Factors and Management. He has shared his expert knowledge at a variety of symposiums and conferences and he has been invited to speak and share his research at hospitals including Lutheran General Hospital, University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital and Evanston Hospital. 

Dr. Barthel received his Ph.D in physical chemistry from University of Southern California in 2003 and his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California in 2007. He completed his residency in general surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 2014. Dr. Barthel completed both a research fellowship and clinical fellowship through Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
